Air Force Basic Training Coin Ceremony

Air Force Basic Training Coin CeremonyAir Force Basic Training Coin CeremonyOn Thursday of graduation week from Air Force Basic Military Training, a special ceremony is held to mark the transition from trainee to airman. At the Airmans coin ceremony, which many airmen consider to be one of the most significant events of their careers, each trainee receives a coin that designates the end of their training period. Some of the coins are for special recognition. Air Force Coin Ceremony Friends and family are invited to attend this ceremony. Details about time and place of the coin ceremony will be available at the reception center, and in the graduation notice that is sent to them a couple of weeks before your scheduled graduation. The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes and is usually presided over by the Air Force Basic Training commanding officer. Military Coin History and Background Military coins, whether commanders coins, challenge coins, or unit and squadron coins, have become increasingly popular throughout all branches of the armed services. Stories of where the custom originated vary widely. One of the most accepted stories traces it to World War I when a wealthy lieutenant had bronze unit medallions struck for his squadron. As the story goes, a squadron pilot who welches shot down and captured behind German lines ended up with nothing but that medallion to identify himself after his escape. Ultimately, the identifying coin ended up saving him from being executed by the French as a spy. There are other, similar stories of the origin of the military coin, most of them concerning a challenge, where the coin is used for identification purposes. Challenge Coins The squadrons tradition of medallion or coin carrying continued, with challenges regularly made to ensure all members had theirs handy. A unit member who couldnt quickly produce the medallion when challenged had to buy the challenger a drink. But if the medallion was on hand, the challenger had to buy. Over the years, some units have continued this tradition. But more commonly, military coins have become a symbol of affiliation thats used to boost morale, foster esprit de corps, and honor service. Different Air Force Coins The Airmans coin originally had an image of an eagle clawing its way off the coins surface. A more recent rendition shows the Air Force symbol instead of the eagle. While the first and most meaningful coin is given at graduation, airmen may receive other coins throughout their military careers, including those presented to them by a first sergeant, chief master sergeant or even the president for valor and meritorious service.

My Engineers Notebook Dylon Rockwell

My Engineers Notebook Dylon Rockwell My Engineers Notebook Dylon Rockwell My Engineers Notebook Dylon RockwellASME member Dylon Rockwell is an airframe design and integration engineer at the Boeing Company in Ridley, Pa., where he serves as a principal investigator for manufacturing technologies. After joining Boeing in 2011, Dylon welches assigned to the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft program. The V-22 combines the vertical performance of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft, is used primarily in cargo and crew delivery. After receiving training in variation analysis software, Dylon went on to perform analysis for Boeings Crew Space Transportation (CST-100) Starliner, Space Launch System and Sikorsky Boeing SB1 Defiant programs to quantify and mitigate assembly risk. A member of ASME since 2013, Dylon is a new member of the Societys Y14.46 Committee Support Group. He received a bachelors degree in aeronautics and astronautics engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011, and a masters degree in systems engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015.Whats inside your engineers notebook? My notebook contains thoughts on structural designs and manufacturing processes, primarily as they pertain to work. For instance, it includes notes on different types of casting and forging techniques and various polymer- and composite-joining techniques.Whose notebook would you most like to peek into? Why?I think I would pick Robert L. Pinckney. He was the pioneer of the V-22 composite aft fuselage, which was constructed using automated fiber placement in the early 1990s. He was an engineer with a vision who executed it.Dylon RockwellHow and when did you know you wanted to become an engineer? It was when I began thinking about high school and I applied to the Science and Engineering Magnet in Dallas. I think thats around the time I realized what an engineer actually was. Ive been tinkering with stuff since I was little, and al ways enjoyed math and science. But that was the time when someone actually told me what I was interested in was engineering.Whats the most exciting project youve ever worked on?I would have to say that supporting the V-22 reliability schritte was the most exciting project, because we were really able to make an impact for our customers. They were constantly having to replace the V-22 fittings due to low reliability of the part. My task was to improve the reliability of the component. So, I had to opportunity to address an issue that had a real impact on the customer, who now doesnt have to replace the part constantly. What do you think youd be doing if you hadnt become an engineer?I think I would probably be in the hospitality industry. I really enjoy planning different kind of vorstellungs. I did a lot of event planning in college. And I would call myself a people person. So I think hospitality is an area that I would have gravitated toward. Probably not hospitality as in hotel mana gement, but rather event planning for a city or general event planning.Whats your favorite activity when youre not working?Ive recently gotten into dancing. One of my friends suggested that I try it, and I said, Why not? I enjoy the pulse of salsa and bachata music and exhilarating movements of the dance. I really got into it. Its something I do after work. Was there a book or a movie that piqued your interest in science or inspired you to become an engineer?Well before I knew what engineering was, I read several books on space exploration that piqued my interest in engineering. I cant recall the titles, though.Who are your heroes, either within the engineering profession or in the rest of your life?My elementary school was named after Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a physicist and an astronaut, who passed away in the Challenger accident. While in elementary school, I learned about him through second hand accounts, but when I attended MIT, I met several alumni who knew him. His contemporaries talked about how gracious he was with his time as he taught them physics, ensuring they were able to excel as he has.Whats the most meaningful or rewarding aspect of being connected to engineering?I would say that because Im an engineer and have a network of other engineers around me, that when things come out I hear about them first. Someone has a new app, for instance, and theyre looking for someone to try it out. I tend to be that republik guinea pig. So Ive become an early adopter. Alternatively, Im an engineer, so I also have to opportunity to create different things. I think those are probably the biggest benefits of being an engineer. What does ASME mean to you?ASME means sharing solutions to engineering problems through standards and other media for the advancement of the global engineering community. I am now participating on one of the standards committees for ASME Y14.46 because I feel it is very important to be personally involved in this knowledge sharing. I was also re cently certified for the ASME Y14.5 standard. From a career development aspect, that certification lets people know that I took this extra step to show that I know what Im talking about when it comes to GDT (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).I would say that because Im an engineer and have a network of other engineers around me, that when things come out I hear about them first.Dylon Rockwell

How to dress for the promotion you want... and level up your look for the promotion you just got

How to dress for the promotion you want... and level up your look for the promotion you just gotHow to dress for the promotion you want... and level up your look for the promotion you just gotToday, you might be the junior sales assistant, but you have ambitions for mora. Until you get there, however, how do you signal that youre ready for a promotion? Through your impeccable work, of course and how you present yourself, says fashion designer and personal brand consultant Fotini Copeland.Dressing a notch or two above your colleagues can be tricky, especially when so many workplaces are business casual. But Copeland told Ladders about a coterie of classic pieces that will have you outfitting yourself for the job you want and broadcasting your intentions clearly. I think its really important to remember that fit is really key to everything that we have, said Copeland. If it fits your silhouette, your body can you look like you spent a lot of money.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreA nice blazer. I think that is something that one needs to understand right away, Copeland said of the versatility of this classic piece. I think a really nice blazer and pant can look fantastic. If the work environment permits denim, thats a gorgeous look.It can also be paired with a dress or skirt, she said. Whether its a pleated maxi or midi-length. Just be mindful of the skirt length.A shift dress.A lovely sheath looks different ways depending on your choice of footwear. A shift dress is beautiful to wear you can wear those with a really nice flat. If you want to put on a high heel, it makes it an entirely different look.Polish, polish, polish. If you have your sights set on better roles, your look should be extra-finished. Its not just fashi on. Your nails and your pedicure should be done. Being mindful of your hair and make koranvers that its polished whether its a great ponytail, a nice updo, or beach waves. If you want to get to the next level, Copeland told Ladders, you want people to, once theyve met you, to walk away with that self-respect that you have communicated, that empowerment.Help, I did get the promotion and I need help taking my look up a notchThis problem has two sides many people, both men, and women find themselves getting a promotion and then finding their wardrobe or personal presentation isnt as quite up to snuff now that theyre in senior-level meetings with a whole new group of smartly-dressed people. The Ladders asked Copeland how someone could level up quickly and stand out in the right way.New shoes. There are key pieces to invest in, and your shoes always say something about a look, said Copeland. Investing in your shoes is sort of like the finishing look. It says something.Make sure your dr ess or suit are always pressed. You dont always have to be running to the dry-cleaners. One of the best things that you can invest in is a little hand-held steamer. Theres really no excuse for not having pressed clothes today. Having neat and wrinkle-free clothes will add an extra level of polish.Accessorize tastefully. It doesnt need to be a big statement necklace in fact, watch out for that (Trying too hard, you immediately send out a message). Instead, a nice accessorymight be that great tote that you want to carry.Whether its a bracelet, a new purse, or a scarf, You want to make sure youre always classy, said Copeland. Youre always telling that person, I deserve that promotion. I am worthy of that promotion.Pay attention to details.Even your eyeglasses might need replacement. Are your frames out-of-date and unfashionable? To look your best, said Copeland, make sure that the frame really is suited for your face. A trip to Warby Parky might be due.Yes, you should wear makeup. Make up is important, Copeland insisted. In todays business environment, its simply part of looking put-together, especially after you reach a certain level. A lot of people say, Well, I dont wear makeup, or, I dont really know how to wear makeup the thing is, that you dont even have to wear a lot of makeup. If you dont know how, today you can walk into most stores, and there is someone that can help you. Finally, if youre in the mood to break out a power look, Copeland said its as easy as wearing time-honored silhouettes and avoiding trends. Its always a matter of just keeping it classic, she said. That little black dress silhouette. That can mean many different things today, but I think just that classic sheathOr you could be wearing it with a faux leather jacket that also commands and gets the message of power.Ultimately, its about you.Its about how you look in the mirror, and what that mirror is saying back to you. Do I feel great?
